Well, all these thoughts are given birth by our sub-conscious mind. One needs to have full control over the sub-conscious thoughts so that one can understand the logic behind such things.

Hi there,
This insight came from talking to the client before the hypnosis session. Once I had found what the problem was it was easy to fix it. She was trying to get love from her parents but always expected to be rejected by them. Therefore all you have to do is to use a script for that.
The script I used was the Photo Album script from the Key Hypnosis clinical collection. The other good script to use would be the Crystal Mountain script.
Either of these would work for this client.

Thanks for the tips shared using your blog. Yet another thing I would
like to mention is that weight loss is not all about going on a dietary fads and trying to get rid of as much weight
that you can in a set period of time. The most effective way to lose
weight is by using it slowly and obeying some basic guidelines which can help you to make the most through your attempt to shed
weight. You may recognize and already be following many of these tips, however reinforcing expertise never affects.

panic attacks [Visitor]
I am deathly scared of flying. When I find out I have to fly somewhere, even motnhs before, I start to panic. As the flight gets closer I start to freak out and the day of, I am a total mess. My heart races, I shake, and throughout the entire flight I am very tense. The take-off and landing are the worst.
The problem is I'm flying down to Florida in July and I don't want to go through all the drama on the day of the flight. I want to stay calm and have a good time on my vacation, not worrying about when I have to fly back home.
Any tips on how to overcome my fear?

You are so right that it's important to make the client feel relaxed yet, like you, I have heard stories of clients who have previously experienced hypnotherapists who don't take this into account.
I also always ask 'Can you visualise?' Not everyone can to any useful extent. I had two this week.

One is predestined because life does not end at death, it simply changes form. Therefore, 1) issues in this lifetime may have arisen from experiences in past lives. So, to understand issues in this lifetime may require past life regression (PLR), not just regression to childhood within the current life. 2) In the cycle of life one is always in a state of becoming. Instead of looking back to how an issue was initiated, look forward to the lesson(s) one is learning in this life. Difficulties in any current lifetime present opportunities to learn lessons that bring one closer to eventual enlightenment.
So, during PLR, explore extant issues from past lives that presented opportunities for learning. If the lessons were not learned, they may be repeating in the current lifetime. If certain lessons were learned, issues in this lifetime may be a further step in that learning progression.
An alternative to PLR is to take the emphasis off the past and look forward. Reframe issues in the context of what the client 'wants'. Help client understand how the issues are preventing desires.
Then be prepared for 'wants' unique to western experience. The primary 'want' usually comes down to 'saving face'.

Yes, I think you are right Steve. It no so much seeing ourselves as others see us, as seeing others as they really are. But it is difficult to take away the filters of love and dependency and expectations that distort our images of ourselves and those who made us what we are.

In essence all behaviors are learned behaviors. And attitude toward oneself is learned from interaction with significant others. So, yes, it can be quite helpful to know something about the people who influenced the client at a young age. The strategy, and maybe this is the thing to learn in hypnotherapy training, is to then convince the client that what they learned from their significant others says more about the others than it does about the client, and to revise their self-image accordingly.

I suspect inexperienced therapists practice at two extremes, they either do no hypnosis in the first session (spending far too much time getting a detailed history), or they induce hypnosis too early and attempt to go immediately to the crux of, what they perceive to be, the problem. Introducing hypnosis for relaxation or sleep in the first session provides multiple indirect benefits. It convinces the client of their own responsiveness. It reinforces trust in the skill of the hypnotherapist. And the promise of more direct intervention in the future provides an incentive for the client to return. The therapist must always keep in mind, we want the client to return, not just because we get paid for another session, but because that is the surest path to ensuring the client gets the change they are seeking; which makes it just plain good therapy practice.

Clients don't connect the dots because they don't see the relationship between past trauma and current behaviors. It's only during hypnotherapy that the blinders are removed so they can see the connection. Fortunately, while in the trance state they can also change their interpretation of past events in order to revise current behaviors. So, yes, it's interesting how blind a client can be to their own disfunction, but it's wonderful to help open their eyes to desirable solutions.

It is unfortunate that the mental health gives such credence to their own labels despite the obvious limitations of 'proving' their existence. It is equally unfortunate that unscrupulous practitioners are as likely to be found in their own midst as the alternative practitioners they shamelessly sully.

Wow this is quite an amazing case! I am so impressed you were able to help Ryan. It sounds like a very common, simple enough problem, that many people think why bother with. But I see why this could come to be an issue in his everyday life, and how opening up to new foods and tastes can broaden many aspects in his life. This is very inspiring that you were able to help him to overcome this! Thanks for sharing your cases, I find them all very interesting! Can't wait to read more!

Here's a hypothetical scenario: Let's say we have a person who needs to stop smoking. Consciously, he knows why he should stop smoking and understands the risks of continuing to smoke. But let's say this person vehemently states, "I don't want to stop!" What part of the mind is that statement coming from? In other words, what's the source of that statement? Is it the conscious mind, the unconscious mind, or a combination of the two? And does the critical factor play a part in the expression of that statement?
I look forward to your response.
Best Regards,
Tom
You raise several good issues there, Tom.
The first thing to consider in your scenario is the ethics of treating someone who doesn't want to be treated. If the person genuinely doesn't want to stop smoking, then we therapists have to respect that and tell them to come back when they do want to stop smoking.
Assuming that the person wants to stop smoking but recognizes that part of them actually is resisting stopping, then you have to consider what that 'part' consists of. In the hypnosis industry too many people treat assumptions and metaphors as if they are facts. There actually is not such thing as the unconscious mind, or the conscious mind for that matter. These are metaphors for things we don't understand. They are useful metaphors, and I use them myself, but they are not real things. If you dissect a human brain you cannot identify any part that would correspond to the unconscious mind. Similarly with parts. There is a popular way of treating people which consists of getting them to identify good parts and bad parts, but these are not real either. They are simply a metaphor to help peoople deal with how they feel. If the client accepts the metaphor, then it has a chance of working, but if they don't then they just reject it as incomprehensible nonsense.
The 'critical factor' is another one of these imaginary assumptions. There is no such thing as the critical factor. It was invented by Dave Elman to explain why the mind rejects some suggestions and accepts others, but it has no basis in fact. It is just another metaphor, something invented to get over the problem that we just don't understand what's going on in the human brain.
So to answer your question: it is any of these, if you believe in them. And it is none of these, if you don't believe in them. The source of the statement is a program running in the background (another metaphor) that hold a belief that smoking is doing somenthing valuable for the client, like confirming their independence; or bonding with a gang; or something else. And if you take away the smoking then you take away that ability, that independence or making friends or some other thing, and the self preservation instinct (another metaphor) fiercely resists losing that ability.
The thing that does the resisting is whatever you choose to call it. We have to make up a name because we really don't have any good idea of what is actually going on, and one made up name is as good as another.
Dave
